Supergirl’s backup stories from the very first: Action Comics #252-284, 1960-62. Highly Recommended. By Jerry Siegel and Otto Binder. Art by Jim Mooney and Al Plastino. For many years, Superman believed himself to be the only survivor of his planet’s destruction, until one day a spacecraft crashed on Earth with a young girl inside—a Supergirl from Krypton, possessing all the same powers as the Man of Steel. And this Maid of Might wasn’t just any Kryptonian survivor, but Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El. First hidden from the world, she did heroic acts with no recognition, no accolades, like Superboy in the television series Smallville. Great stories from a simpler time, written by two wonderfully talented creators.

Otto Binder created Mary Marvel in the 1940s, and wrote many of the most beloved Captain Marvel stories for many years. When he moved over to DC, he became one of the finest writers to chronicle the complicated Superman mythos across comics from Superman /em> to Action to Superboy and Adventure and the Legion of Superheroes. With Supergirl he brings back a more innocent time, where heroic feats are done undercover, as she takes Superman's advice and hides her heroic alter ego while she "trains" for the big time! Each story is complete in itself, with guest appearances from Superman, of course.

And of course, also here is the creator of Superman, Jerry Siegel, bringing his own twist to the Superman mythos in these tales from near the end of his career in comics.

And artist Jim Mooney is a solid talent here, an artist who began doing comics in the very early 1940s. He worked his way up to the excellent solo Robin stories in Star Spangled Comics, while he also worked on Batman and many other characters for DC. His work here reflects again the simplicity and straightforward qualities of a Curt Swan, one of Superman's finest delineators.
