Aspiring comic book artists and storytellers will thoroughly enjoy this book! Seasoned author and art teacher Daniel Cooney shows readers how to draw credible perspective from any point of view for convincing backgrounds, and their relationships with the characters that inhabit them. This instructional book works like a journal filled with exercises for creating scenes in the context of storytelling. Practical demonstrations and interactive workbook grids to complete show readers how to enjoy the process as they develop their drawing mechanics and storytelling "chops."
Explore the behavior of light and its importance for drawing from imagination; the concepts of composition; how to create visually engaging characters and environments; use references to create fantastic work from unique camera angles; and more. Once you've come to grips with perspective, you'll notice that your work looks and feels authentic—and as you follow the author's plan, you might just become the best comic book artist EVER!
This is quite the technical tool, and so for once I'm not going to recommend it as an art collection like other how-to books can be. Although it does boast full color and b&w examples of art, the main thrust is education for artists. I admit that we are predjudiced in its favor because we know and respect Dan's work. He was a teacher in San Francisco and a frequent participant in Artist's Alleys at local shows and at San Diego Comic-Con.
Dan graduated with a BFA in Illustration and Cartooning from legendary School of Visual Arts. Its alumni include artists, designers, writers, filmmakers, photographers and other creative professionals. Among them are Academy Award winners, Emmy Award winners, Grammy winners, MacArthur Fellows and Guggenheim Fellows. Alumni include Wally Wood, Joe Sinnott, James Jean, Steve Ditko, Archie Goodwin, Thomas Yeates...
And a personal note: He met a young lady who worked here, Carolina, and the rest is history. They now live near Martha's Vineyard and are raising a family. That may be neither here or there, but it's clear they would never have known one another if Carolina hadn't entered the comics world working for us here. We miss her!
