Seductive visuals from pre-Nazi, Cabaret-period Germany. “Babylon on the Spree” has the distinction of being praised both by scholars and avatars of contemporary culture, inspiring hip club goers, filmmakers, gay historians, graphic designers, and musicians like the Dresden Dolls and Marilyn Manson. Vintage photos of staged bondage, s&m, storytelling tableaux, and just gorgeous women from the 1930s in erotic decadence in a country that would soon be doomed by its crazed leaders.

Drugs like cocaine, bad girls, whores, hot sisters, crossed boundaries, "laughing nudity", the new calculus of desire...these are some of the subjects of 13 chapters that explore a world gone somewhat mad, willing to do anything for a sexual or voyeuristic thrill. The photos are quite amazing, and we expect most have never before been collected. Also some wonderful vintage graphics, magazine covers, brochure covers, flyers, posters.

This expanded edition includes “Sex Magic and the Occult,” documenting German pagan cults and their often-bizarre erotic rituals, including instructions for entering into the “Sexual Fourth Dimension.”

Also includes a complete chapter "A Directory of the Erotic and Nighttime Berlin." Listings have been compiled of clubs from the late Weimar period, from 1927-1932. These include Girl-Culture Venues, Homosexual Venues, Lesbian Venues, Nudist Venues, Sex Museums, Transvestite Venues, Underworld Venues, and Weimar Nazi Venues.

The final chapter, "A World in Flames," shows how a communist fanatic-turned arsonist helped cement Hitler's dictatorial powers in 1933. It was the beginning of the end of freedom and the free-for-all of the anything-goes world of Berlin, and the beginning of the dark days of Nazi-controlled Germany.

Mel Gordon is professor of theater at the University of California, Berkeley, and is also the author of Erik Jan Hanussen: Hitler’s Jewish Clairvoyant (Feral House).
