Details

Launched by Walt Disney in 1929 as a "musical novelty" series to complement Mickey Mouse, the Silly Symphonies soon became much more. This line of delightfully innovative, animated cartoons ran for ten years and produced such classics as The Three Little Pigs, The Tortoise and the Hare, Music Land, and The Old Mill. Silly Symphonies won every Academy Award. From the authors of the prize-winning Walt in Wonderland: The Silent Films of Walt Disney, this richly illustrated volume is a complete history including detailed entries for all the Symphonies along with a lengthy critical analysis and production history of the series.
 
Here are at least one or two images from each cartoon, sometimes with concept art, along with full details, from a long synopsis to full credits, opening dates, critical analysis of the music, even DVD release information. All the staff are noted, details on the production schedule, TV premieres (often on the 1950s Mickey Mouse Club), etc.
 
More titles include Mother Goose Goes Hollywood (with the Marx Brothers), The Ugly Ducking, Merbabies, Toby Tortoise Returns, The Goddess of Spring, The Robber Kitten, Ferdinand the Bull, Don Donald, and dozens and dozens more.
 
Very fascinating are all the unfinished proposals, including full details on never-completed projects like Reynard the Fox, Puss in Boots, Punch and Judy, Minnehaha, Many Moons Ago, The Little Mermaid, Little Black Sambo, The Leak in the Dyke, Japanese Symphony, The Shy Little Bear, Snow Babies, Streuwel Peter , etc.
 
Also includes several appendixes. One examines the color Sunday pages that were adapted from the films, incluidng a note about Harrison Cady's work that was a source for the Symphonies background and character design. A discography; Silly Symphony books, 1934-40;Good Housekeeping pages which again adapted the films from 1934-39.
