The famous artist's most personal and cherished images... revealed for the first time! Created entirely for personal pleasure over the course of five decades, these 67 paintings and 24 photographs capture the lives of the people Bama encountered during his trips to Tibet, Mexico, Japan, China and the mountainous frontier of Montana and Idaho. These are powerful portraits of old-world, weathered, working people and children. His photo-realistic style, so perfectly used on the Doc Savage covers, is also here on cowboys, women, old men, workers. Each is accompanied by Bama's commentary.

An acknowledged master of his craft, James Bama began his legendary career with atmospheric, dynamic and dramatic paperback book covers that fired the imaginations of generations of readers, even as they inspired countless youths to become illustrators themselves.

His Doc Savage covers are legendary now, although in the same style (and using some of the same models) he also painted covers for another pulp series, The Avenger, as well as dozens of westerns.

His later work entered the fine-art realm of Western Illustration. He distilled the spirit of the rapidly disappearing American West by focusing on the rugged individuals who still inhabit those vast and empty plains, from cowboys to American Indians. 20-page introduction. Beautifully produced hardcover with a cloth cover and full color jacket.
