Star-crossed lovers, magical winds, mischievous giants and trolls--in some of the most exquisite illustrations in publishing history. In this gorgeous new edition, Taschen pulls out all the stops to present an entirely new version of the best-loved book by Danish (and Disney) artist Kay Nielsen--one of the most famous children's book illustrators of all time. First published in 1914, fifteen fairy tales, gathered by legendary Norwegian folklorists Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Engebretsen Moe on their journeys across Norway in the mid-nineteenth century.

Nielsen's illustrated edition of these tales is considered a jewel of the early 20th-century Golden Age of Illustration. It's highly sought-after by collectors--an unsigned, first trade edition in nice condition goes for $3000+! The deluxe signed edition, sold at auction in 2008, commanded the highest price ever paid for an illustrated children's book.

Taschen's recent reprint of this was one of their finest-crafted books that we've had the privilege to handle. This new edition drops the size by perhaps 25% but otherwise its just the same as the $40 edition, complete with the gold-embossed cover.

This finely crafted reprint restores the stunning detail and artistry of Nielsen's images to their original splendor. Many of the plates have been newly scanned from the original art. With 46 illustrations, including many enlarged details from Nielsen's watercolors, printed in five colors with a lovingly designed slipcase. Three accompanying essays (including one by Colin White), illustrated with dozens of rare and previously unseen artworks by Nielsen, explore the history of Norwegian folktales, Nielsen's life and work, and how this book came to be.

Raised in a family of stage directors and costume designers, he brought a different perspective to his art than contemporaries Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac. His color plates are stage scenes, with brilliant coloring, flamboyant costumes, intricate backgrounds. He caught Walt Disney's attention and worked on Fantasia ("Night on Bald Mountain") and Sleeping Beauty.
