Almost Gone! Signed, with additional signed print! Our Highest Recommendation. By Thomas Haller Buchanan.

This is the second self-published, Kickstarter art book of Buchanan's and it's once again a joy to see. Here's what Michael Kaluta said in his introduction to Buchanan's first book, Faces, Figures, Fantasies and it's still spot on here: "There is a magic effect to THB's portraiture...THB applies his knowledge, his insights, and his ability to present worlds unseen to everything he creates. Though he has pulled in influences from everywhere, he is no copyist. THB hands forward the authenticities garnered during his studies [of past illustation masters], giving them to the world via his art..."

Note: These copies have very lightly bumped corners but this edition is out of print, so we've discounted these..

THB hands forward the authenticities garnered during his studies [of past illustation masters]..." Bonus: Comes with a beautiful 11 x 8 1/2 full color print, "The Frost Giant's Daughter," which he has also signed. He's done these exclusively for Bud Plant customers.

"THB's ability to draw through all he's seen, met, known and felt enables him to bring forward the soul of his subjects."

Here is Buchanan on this new collection: "I used to paint, I still could, but I choose to draw. Graphites, charcoals, conté crayons, wax crayons, pastels, prismacolors, sometimes pen and ink—these are my instruments of choice."

"I've been drawing for a living for over 40 years! That makes me sound like an old guy, but drawing keeps me young! It keeps me searching and keeps me finding! I find beauty and character and action and adventure and peace and tranquility. I find myself. I'd like to share what I've found and offer my techniques of the drawing process."

"Like ancient artisans, I think of the act of drawing as a 'magic rite', a private ceremony that creates something from nothing. For me, from simple 'gesture sketches' to final detailed drawings, there is a state of mind, a sense of purpose, 'drawing' energies from a mysterious source. That sounds very mystical, but it reflects a practical method that works for me, and here I share the results and the process."

"I explain the process that I work with to achieve my results. Though it is not a tutorial, I show step-by-step case histories for some of my drawings." Thomas Buchanan.

This new collection offers exquisite portraits (of beautiful women) and scenes, both fully finished and in process. He specializes in, for want of a better word, romantic, idealized drawings. Sheherazade, a modernization of Fiction House's Sky Girl (shown here); La of Opar; actress Camren Bicondova of Gotham; idealized fantasy women as well as modern beauties.

Also here is his interpretation of statues and designs for the highly stylish 1915 Panama Pacific Exposition; ancient architecture; vintage autos and trains (with dinosaurs!); 1930s bi-planes and a zepplin; Indians and mountain men on the Oregon trail; the modern army in urban combat; backdrops for a Museum of Modern Art exhibit on Ramses the Great. Even a preliminary piece showing Dejah Thoris in all her exotic beauty, one of the subjects of his first collection.

Each work, no matter the subject, is delicately, intimately rendered in a detail that defies my understanding. Since he's an artist new to my audience, I try to force a comparison to help others understand his appeal. Everett Raymond Kinstler--Jim Silke--Kaluta himself--even Fortunino Matania, also master of the pencil and the costume as Buchanan is...this is the best I can do to convey just some of the artists his work reminds me of. But he is more...the intimacy of his work defies my description.

Thomas Buchanan is a commissioned artist, illustrator and visual designer.  He has worked with every artistic medium, for all communications media, creating commissioned portraits, fine art, murals and illustrations throughout the country. Always ready to take on new projects, he refers to himself as a ‘Pictorialist’, with a passion for creating images of remarkable people.

He has designed graphics and murals for visitor centers for the US Forest Service, various state parks and numerous other organizations.  As an illustrator/muralist for Denver Museum of Nature and Science, his projects included artwork for exhibits ranging from Chinese, Egyptian and Native American cultures to dinosaurs and space technology.  For 30 years he was the Staff Tribute Artist for the Denver International Film Festival— rendering portraits of some 200 legendary directors, actors and filmmakers for promotional and publicity uses.

Thom is also the editor, creative director and sometimes illustrator of Pictorial Arts Journal—an online publication that showcases and promotes the significance of the pictorial arts, exploring the splendors and visionary skills of artists, past and present. In conjunction with that role, he enjoys presenting illustrated talks showcasing art history and techniques.

Note: These copies have very slightly bumped corners. Normally we'd have gotten replacements in as-new condition, but in this case the book is now out of print and we cannot replace these. So by agreement with the publisher, we reduced to the price to, honestly, more than compensate for the minor condition flaw.
