- Full Description
Showcasing some of the art form’s most beautiful comics, this premier volume includes two of Manara’s seminal works: the sweeping 139-page epic Indian Summer, a savage adventure that takes us to the Indian/settler wars in late 1700's America. This is a rare collaboration with Hugo Pratt. Plus Manara’s The Paper Man, another adventure but now out west, with a beautiful and feisty Indian girl. Scattered explicit sex scenes and nudity make this for mature readers, but these stories are atypical for Manara, showing his skill creating an exciting action story.
Painstakingly translated by Euro comics expert Kim Thompson. Also featured is a Foreword by comics luminary Frank Miller. Introduction by Andrea Plazzi, who nicely sets the scene and describes how the two comics greats first came to fame in Europe, and then, by mutual admiration, came to create this extra-long tale, first published in the 1980s.
Manara's beautiful and seductive women are always a highlight of his graphic novels, and they are an integral part of both of these stories. But this offers us something quite different, as we watch settlers fighting tooth and nail to stay alive, as well as good and noble Indians, counter-balanced by true blood-thirsty savages. And the art itself is superlative--this is Manara in his prime.
