- Full Description
Join Mandrake as he battles slavers, explores the Lost World, unlocks the mystery of a haunted house, travels to Hollywood and back in time, and meets Blozz the mysterious. In June 1965, artist Fredericks took over Mandrake from the late Phil Davis. Creator Lee Falk proceeded to modernize the storylines, making it more reality-based by focusing less on science fiction and fantasy, and making Mandrake operate more like a secret agent, often helping out the police with cases they could not solve.
Fredericks drew the strip until 2002, and he took over writing after Lee Falk died in 1999. The strip ended with the last one that Fredericks did in 2002, a run of some seventy years!
These are the further newspaper comic strip adventures of Mandrake The Magician and his ever-faithful companion and trusty side-kick, Lothar. Join them on their never-ending quest as they unravel mysteries, battle intrigue and lock horns with Mandrake's arch enemy, the nefarious and ruthless criminal mastermind, The Cobra, armed with nothing more than a top hat, incredible hypnotic abilities, a wand and the immense strength of Lothar, African Prince!
This leads off with an Appreciation of Fred Fredericks by Roger Langridge, which includes four wonderful specialty drawings (we've scanned one set here) done for fans. Then Jon Preddle introdudces the Fredericks era, with another fine specialty drawing of Mandrake and the Phantom telling the artist to "draw it right!" as well as a rare syndicate promotion piece for the strip, and the original art for a Defenders of the Earth comic book page from 1987, starring Mandrake, by Fredericks.
