Introduction by Roy Thomas, Afterword by Michael Allred.

After a long run with Dark Horse, Conan makes his return to Marvel in 2019. This is a perfect guide to the best of Robert E. Howard's ageless thief, warrior, mercenary, horseman, pirate, plunderer and king.

As Roy says it so well in the very first line of his introduction: "In the beginning, Conan the Barbarian was all about the art."

Roy Thomas brought Conan to Marvel and wrote or oversaw the series for the first ten years. "As writer and editor, my job was to pair the proper artist with REH's sword-wielding Cimmerian. Marvel needed someone who drew heroic figures and beautiful women in exotic, pseudo-historical and fantasy lands. The original artist was briefly scheduled to be John Buscema, before financial penuriousness on the publisher's part led me to give the assignment to newcomer Barry Smith (later Windsor-Smith). That "forced error" turned out to be a monumental stroke of luck for Conan, Barry and me, as the young Britisher went from strength (Jack Kirby influences) to strength (Art Noueau inspiration) over the course of the next three years...but the parade of top-flight artists on the title had only begun.”

Other artists Roy brought on included Mike Ploog, Val Mayerik, Howard Chaykin--and that doesn't begin to include the fine inkers. Roy outlines the entire artistic history of Conan over the next two decades after he left Marvel. And this includes the map of Hyperborea, first published in Conan #1 in 1970.
