New 2019 Introduction by Mark Waid . He bluntly describes the criticism of Jack's work here, which was chronicled in back and forth in the letters columns. Jack was unhappy redoing villains and a character he'd twice (or more) left behind, even though Cap was his signature character. He felt he was getting mixed messages from the upper tier at Marvel.

But he trusted his well-respected editor Archie Goodwin, who worked closely with Jack to iron things out. As Waid points out, "That said--all that said--please make no mistake. These are good stories. There are moments of brilliance in these pages that are priceless, concepts that are still ahead of our time and Kirby never lost energy on his artwork. Captain American and the Falcon are still soaring off the page with a majesty befitting the King. And for my money, seeing an out-of-costume Steve Rogers pound the snot out of a band of central-casting mob gangsters while sporting a blue pinstripe suit is worth the price of admission alone."
