Johnny Blaze, the Ghost Rider, makes his Masterworks debut! In 1972, one of the most iconic characters in comic book history, the flame-skulled Ghost Rider, burned his demonic presence into readers' minds. It all begins here when Johnny Blaze makes a deal with the devil to save his friend's life. The payment? Transformation into the Ghost Rider. The stories that follow will take the horror hero to Hell to battle Satan, pit him against the tempting Witch-Woman and team him with Daimon Hellstrom, Son of Satan. And meet Spider-Man.

Written by Gary Friedrich and gloriously illustrated by Mike Ploog, Tom Sutton and Jim Mooney, this iconic series is beautifully restored for this Marvel Masterworks edition.

New Afterward by Mike Ploog. Bonus features include the 1972 Bullpen Bulletin annoucing the series, original art by Ploog from the first Marvel Spotlights, more original art by Mooney and Syd Shores (pictured here), original art covers by Gil Kane, John Romita and Ross Andru, plus a handsome cover gallery with 1990's reprint series, by Mark Texeira, Andy Kubert, Joe Quesada, Klaus Janson, Michael Blair and others, including a new one by Ploog.

Long, detailed 4-page introduction about the history of this character, back to his original creation as a western hero drawn by Dick Ayers, in 1949. Roy Thomas brings us up to date, along with a mention of the famous early song by Vaughn Monroe and later by Frankie Laine..."Ghost Riders in the Sky." Did you know it all goes back to musical origins? The Ghost Rider comic became a huge comics hit, first in the pages of Tim Holt and then as its own title...with those amazing Frank Frazetta covers.

It all came around again in 1972, when young Marvel writer Gary Friedrich came up with the brilliant idea to resurrect this famous character for a modern day...as a tormented, devil-like motorcycle rider. And this would become one of Marvel's biggest hits in the 1970s. But there's even more...Stan first resurrected the hero in 1968, still as a western frontier character...but the series was cancelled after eight issues. This new incarnation, in 1972, would become the definitive Marvel version. All the details, right down to the office conversations, are here.  Roy Thomas was a big fan of the original and wrote for the 1967 revival, and in 1972 was Friedrich's editor, working to revive this hero. All this is laid out in Roy's fascinating Introduction.
