The complete Wildstorm series, #1-6, 2005-2006. Highly Recommended. By Devin Grayson. Art by Brian Stelfreeze. Shades of Steranko--this is stylish, dynamic, intriguing. Is this guy Matador good or bad? Grayson (Batman: Gotham Night) and Stelfreeze (Black Panther, Batman) bring you an unusual and stylish story pitting Lt. Isabel Cardona against this mystery man--and her department. Dismissed as a quota minority hire by her colleagues, Cuban-born and Florida-bred Cardona makes no friends on the Miami force by insisting that seemingly unrelated murder cases lead to an urban-legend killer known only as "The Matador." Proving his existence becomes the only way to prove her sanity—but even she doubts herself, seeing his seemingly supernatural abilities.

Dismissed as a quota minority hire by her colleagues, Cuban-born and Florida-bred Cardona makes no friends on the Miami force by insisting that seemingly unrelated murder cases lead to an urban-legend killer known only as "The Matador." Bud here: I just read this...it was a page-turner and I could not put it down until I finished it. It turns out, it reads even better than it looks, and it really does look good. I don't make the Steranko comparison lightly, and I'm now inspired to go search down more work by these two creators. I just raised my recommendation to "highly."

This is very impressive, And this Matador guy seems to be super-powered somehow, performing seemingly impossible acrobatics, like something you'd see in The Matrix, and disarming our heroine like magic. But whose side is he really on? Suddenly this seemingly serial killer is protecting Cardona. No spoilers, but let me say this is very realistic and real-world, right down to our heroine sleeping with someone, which she instantly regrets. Although we're calling this volume 1, this seems entirely complete in itself, with the kind of closure at the end that you'd expect more from the typical non-series French graphic novel. I see nothing about one, though I wish to see more of Lt. Cardona.

"Between Grayson's vivid voices and complex characterizations, and Stelfreeze's gorgeously sharp and sophisticated artwork, this is a book you'll be taking down from your shelf again and again." -Paul D. Storrie, writer of The Viking Queen, Gotham Girls, Revisionary

"MATADOR was ahead of its time and is right on time for mainstream comics, as an examination of how women navigate within power structures of influence and how heroism is a relative term in the real world...an elegant dance of a story, and as the dance continues, your head spins, your heartbeat increases, and when it stops, what remains is blood, carnage, and difficult decisions...I wouldn't have missed it for the world." -Joseph Illidge, editor, DC Comics, Valiant, Milestone.
