- Full Description
Men at Sea is an opus of eight spectacularly drawn dramatic stories, tightly adapted by French illustrator Riff Reb’s and often using a great deal of the original (and superbly written) text. Plus there are also eight more double-page drawings, each accompanied by poetic, poignant excerpts from stories, with Riff giving us a key scene. What we get is a rich, poetic, and masterfully crafted work of life and death on the sea--drawn in a style that will remind you of Berni Wrightson--particularly the double-page works.
I read this from cover to cover and was really impressed. The prose is outstanding, with haunting pieces by the authors listed above plus Robert Louis Stevenson ("The Sinking Ship"), Marcel Schwob ("The Three Customs Officers") , and Pierre Mac Orlan ("The Galley Slaves," "The Far South").
You may recognize William Hope Hodgson as an author whose stories often appeared in Weird Tales, although he died in 1918. His work was much admired by Howard, Lovecraft and others. From Wikipedia: Hodgson used his experiences at sea to lend authentic detail to his short horror stories, many of which are set on the ocean, including his series of linked tales forming the "Sargasso Sea Stories." His two stories here are great: "The Sea Horses" and "The Samraken Howard-Bounder."
Don't miss this, it's a real keeper. We just learned this is the third in a series about the sea by Reb's. We can't find an English translation of the second book, but the first was Jack London's The Sea Wolf. It was done as a new Classics Illustrated graphic novel in 2014, and we are bringing in copies of it to keep this one company.
