Nearly 200 stunningly realistic paintings and the inspired and highly detailed drawings and studies that led to them. The greatest fantasy epic of all time comes to life. Classical realism unites with contemporary storytelling as artist Donato Giancola explores the mythic grandeur and the iconic characters of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. Introduction by Ted Naismith. Oversized, dramatic, a simply gorgeous volume.

Donato Giancola has made it his life's work to translate Tolkien's words into compelling visuals, with gorgeous oil paintings and drawings reminiscent of Rembrandt and Caravaggio. His interpretations of Middle-Earth span his entire career, from private commissions to the 2001 edition of the graphic novel adaptation of The Hobbit, all collected in this massive compendium--a must-have for collectors of Tolkien and fantasy art.

"What struck me about J.R.R. Tolkien's work was how he filled Middle-Earth with a wealth of history," says Giancola. "From the simple beginnings of Bilbo and the dwarves in The Hobbit, to the personal trials of Frodo and the Fellowship in The Lord of the Rings, to the epic tragedies in The Silmarillion, these tales are woven together by a grand fabric of unifying mythologies, bringing depth to the cultures and characters within."

The only other artist that draws with this kind of depth and photo-realism is Alex Ross. Giancola has never done comics work, so he is less known in our world. But he has been a frequent contributor and award-winner in the Spectrum annuals, and was elected Grand Master in the upcoming 2019 edition.

"Amazing work from an astounding talent." - George R.R. Martin

"Underneath the incredibly meticulous surface of his paintings is concealed a love of perspective and form, an intimate understanding of the human body, a historian's knowledge of costume and armor, an infallible sense of implicit narrative, visual storytelling, and mythical history. It's just that you're so rapt gazing at all the mind-blowing pretty bits that you tend to miss it. Look again. There's a lot more to see." -John Howe, artist and concept designer for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Films.

"There is so much passion, so much depth, and so much truth in Donato's paintings, that the viewer can't help but get caught up in the stories his work tells. Simply put, among contemporary narrative artists, Donato Giancola is a master." -Arnie and Cathy Fenner, Directors, Spectrum Fantastic Art
