Highly Recommended. By Enki Bilal. The Monster tetralogy is influential creator Enki Bilal's most personal work, a dystopian science fiction epic that reminds us of Philip K. Dick's Bladerunner and Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash. A radical organization seeks to eliminate science and truth from the world, and concurrently aliens may have contacted us but it's being covered up. The story follows Amir, astrophysicist Leyla and Nike, a man who has a perfect memory back to day 1 of his life. They are being manipulated by organizations who consider them expendable. Outstanding artwork reminiscent of Moebius and The Fifth Element. Mature Readers.

These three were orphans born days apart, in the same bed, amidst the bombs of Sarajevo (Bilal's homeland) during the war of Yugoslavia in 1993. The lives of the three spiral off on different trajectories before coming together once more. Collects the entire four-part story in English for the first time. Collection includes The Dormant Monster, December 32, Rendezvous in Paris, and Quatre?

I haven't always been a big fan of Bilal, but here I do feel he's perfect. His work makes me think of John Berkey, I love the retro flying cars, the strange mutated characters, the nano-bots disguised as flies that are a mystery element throughout. I've only just started reading it, but I'm already hooked. The oversized format beautifully sets off his polished painted panels, which are often epic in scope. It's a bleak view of the world of tomorrow, yet it's held together by the well-defined characters who truly care for one another, in battle against huge forces whose only love is power, whose only ability is to manipulate. Good stuff!
