From Groot to Fin Fang Foom, Marvel collects Jack Kirby's monster masterworks in two astonishing Omnibus volumes! Before the Marvel's super heroes, it was the Marvel age of monsters! Action-packed classics, many hinting at the famous Marvel heroes and villains to come: Thorr the Unbelievable; a woolly, alien Hulk; the eight-foot-tall Magneto. These tales are the awe-inspiring crucible that created the Marvel Age of Comics!
A cool bonus is dozens and dozens of pages with the new and re-done covers that were created for the reprints of these stories -- Fantasy Masterpieces (which also featured the first reprints of the Golden Age Captain America, Subby and The Human Torch), Where Monsters Dwell (with new covers by Kirby, Gil Kane, John Buscema), Monsters on the Prowl (with Marie Severin, more Kirby et al), Beware! (with Bill Everett et al), Chamber of Chills (with Berni Wrightson), Creatures on the Loose, Crypt of Shadows, Fear the revived, Journey Into Mystery and Strange Tales, Tomb of Darkness, Tower of Shadows, Weird Wonder Tales... you get the idea. 36 pages times four covers to a page--nearly 150 in all. Most of these I certainly missed. The cover re-dos are as cool as the new ones.
Another bonus is seven pages of original artwork and a 1959 letter from Stan to inker Dick Ayers.
And they are fun. The underdog always wins here, threatened by death and destruction, but our heroes use their heads and take down the most monstrous foes. There are creatures from deep inside the earth, bizarre alien invaders, abominable snowmen, lost cities, atomic bomb disasters...In just six, eight or ten pages, Stan and Jack, or Larry and Jack, could take you on a spellbound journey into every young kid's best fantasies.
After I first discovered Marvel comics in the spring of 1964, I got turned onto these little masterpieces created by the same wonderful folks who were writing and drawing The Fantastic Four, The Incredible Hulk, Giant-Man and the Wasp, Captain America, Thor and The Avengers. Here were the same ironic stories, down-trodden heroes, and galactic menaces, just with no continuing heroes. Every story (well, with a couple exceptions) was once and done, but oh boy, they were great fun. I loved 'em, collected them all, and to this day still prize my original issues--the "pre-hero" issues of all the titles below.
This is the first-ever collection with so much material--some have been previously collected in 10-issues-at-a-time Marvel Masterworks. But here you get a massive number of stories at far less cost overall.
Collects material from Strange Tales (1951) #67-70, 72-86; Journey Into Mystery (1952) #51-70; World of Fantasy (1956) #15-19; Strange Worlds (1958) #1, 3-5; Tales to Astonish (1959) #1, 3-19; Tales of Suspense (1959) #2-19.
