- Full Description
This episodic graphic novel follows the journey of Mort Cinder, a man who rises from the grave each time he is killed. His travels through time, space, and the darkest corners of humanity are shown from the point of view of Ezra Winston, an antiquarian who becomes Mort’s companion. Alberto Breccia’s experimental chiaroscuro captures the expressive faces of hardened prisoners, shell-shocked soldiers, and grotesque grave robbers; his atmospheric stories take the reader to eerie cemeteries, ancient Babylonian tombs, and the treacherous waters of the Atlantic.
Amazing artwork and storytelling, this will remind you of the work of, yes, believe it, Steranko, Bill Sienkiewicz, Alex Raymond, Alex Toth. While the story takes us literally around the world and through time, as noted above, it’s a tour de force of episodic adventures. I'd known of this strip, but until now I'd not really studied it, since most of the time I saw just a page or two or four in a periodical from overseas, sometimes badly printed.
This changes everything. It's a superb compilation of material, and after just reading the first pages, I'm eager to jump in for the rest of the stories. I now understand why this strip is so legendary, given the quality of the art and the narrative, and considering this is from the 1960s, no less. You owe it to yourself to check this out if you are not already a died-in-the-wool fan of Breccia and writer Hector German Oesterheld.
Presented in English for the first time, these horror-adventure tales are as chilling and accessible as they were half a century ago. Breccia, who is recognized as one of the most influential cartoonists in the world, created Mort Cinder between 1962–1964 in collaboration with the Argentine writer Héctor Oesterheld, best known in the U.S. for the award-winning The Eternaut.

- Unique. Love the art!
- Gorgeous fine-line artwork, and a very strange story of an old antiquarian dealer who somehow gets wrapped up with a man who cannot die...Mort Cinder. As the multiple stories develop, our elderly protagonist actually goes along with Mort into the past to experience World War I and other historic events. Very strange, very unique. I'd always heard good things about this strip, and it has not disappointed. Love the art.
