$12.95
The Case of the Six Coffins.1935. By Robert J. Hogan. From the scarce first issue of this unusual pulp devoted to a Fu-Manchu like villain. “There is one Val Kildare, government agent. It is my wish that he die the most painful death in our power to inflict.” From an underground room in Limehouse this order was given. And now, across the Atlantic, a murder cargo speeds to wipe out the only man who stands between Wu Fang, Emperor of Crime, and his conquest of the world! With wonderful interior illustrations by (my best guess) John R. Flanagan and cover by Jerome Rozen.

From the scarce first issue of this unusual pulp devoted to a Fu-Manchu like villain. “There is one Val Kildare, government agent. And now, across the Atlantic, a murder cargo speeds to wipe out the only man who stands between Wu Fang, Emperor of Crime, and his conquest of the world! With wonderful interior illustrations by (my best guess) John R. Flanagan, and cover by Jerome Rozen.

Flanagan's work stands out here, a huge leap above the typical interior pulp illustratiojns of this time. He did wonderful artwork for Fu Manchu in Colliers Magazine which was the big time in the 1930s. He drew covers for the early issues of DC's Adventure Comics and Double Action, as well as Sherlock Holmes stories and illustrated books and much, much more. And he hung out with pulp giants like Norman Saunders, Allan Anderson, Raphael DeSoto, and George Gross. Steranko is a big fan of his work. Although his work is just a part of this first issue, beginning a new series, it is too good not to deserve mention.
