They will risk fiery death flying obsolete biplanes as night-bombers against the invader. But these pilots and navigators are women, who must, and do, prove themselves capable even as most lose their lives. In the lethal skies above the Eastern front, they will become a legend known to friend and foe alike as the Night Witches. And one woman will survive, to move up to flying fighters and becoming a hero of Soviet Russia for her determination and skill.

With casualties mounting and the conflict devouring more and more of her comrades, Lieutenant Anna Kharkova quickly grows from a naive teenager to a hardened combat veteran. These stories previously appeared in Battlefields. This is the first time all three Night Witches stories are collected in one volume and they are compelling. I could not put the book down once I started it.

Garth Ennis credits include Preacher, The Boys and Hitman, as well as successful runs on The Punisher and Fury. Russ Braun is a 30-year comics vet, with seven years of working with Disney Feature Animation. He works frequently with Ennis on other wartime pieces.

"We live in a world where war has become an accepted facet of life, but Ennis and Braun show how hellish that facet can be. This title is a riveting read, compelling in its subject matter and narrative movement." -Comic Book Resources

"Few contemporary writers get the psychology of the war story like Garth Ennis...This is definitely worth a look." -Newsarama

"Ennis writes some of the most powerful, kick-ass women in comics." -Comic Book Daily

I agree with all these testimonials. Ennis points out, in a long Afterword, how Russia lost 27 million people in WWII. The U.S. and Britain lost, believe it or not, less than a million each. That is still a massive number, but 27 million? The savagery and desperation that this evoked from the Soviets is very clear in this volume, couple with the savagery of the Nazi's, fighting in a foreign country with no interest in compassion, believing their enemy to be sub-human--especially the women--and just desperate to win and get the hell home.
