Almost Gone! Recommended. Edited by Jared Gardner and Dean Mullaney. Here we are, at the height of Percy Crosby's cartooning career, but also during his one-man political and social crusade. Crosby influenced cartoonists from Charles Schulz to Walt Kelly to Garry Trudeau, and, perhaps more than any other cartoonist before him, brought philosophy and politics to the American newspaper comic strip. Bonus materials include a 14--page introduction with scads of Skippy merchandise--he was huge, promoting furnace oil, Mazda lamps, games, dolls, cereal and bread!

Also with many photographs and rare artwork from the collection of the cartoonist's daughter, Joan Crosby Tibbetts. Includeds a page of Skippy "Lucky Bucks," of which we show four out of the eight, which was a popular addition to the King Features Sunday pages. Readers could cut out the bucks and collect them, or use as play money.

In the end, it would be his outspoken political and philosophical beliefs that would place him increasingly outside the mainstream of 1940s American culture. This ultimately led to his exile from comics and his forced incarceration in a mental institution for the last sixteen years of his life. As a result of his tragic end, Crosby's remarkable contributions to American culture have been largely eclipsed, until now.

This comes again with a special die-cut "belly-band," half-sized dust jacket. This appears as the "fence" behind which Skippy is running, covering up the bottom 1/3 of the picture. Mark my words, these are going to get thrashed in "brick and mortar" stores and comic shops--they are delicate and easy to snag and tear. Your copies from us will be in perfect condition.
