Recommended. By Laurent Queyssi and Mauro Marchesi. One of the greatest writers in science fiction history, Philip K. Dick is mostly remembered for such works as The Man In the High Castle and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? His dark, fascinating work centered on alternate universes and shifting realities in worlds often governed by monopolistic corporations and authoritarian governments. His own life story seems a tussle with reality, cycling through five marriages and becoming increasingly disjointed with fits of paranoia and hallucinations fueled by abuse of drugs meant to stabilize him. His dramatic story is presented unvarnished in this graphic novel biography, first published in France in 2017.

This begins with Dick's childhood in the 1930s, discovering science fiction pulps. He broke into science fictiion doing short stories for all the top periodicals in the early 1950s, but he quickly found these didn't pay enough to support him and his new wife. Author Poul Anderson met Dick at a science fiction convention and recommended he begin writing novels. Harlan Ellison was also an early fan, excited to meet a fellow writer of the outré.

Dick used methaphetamines to amp up his productivity and turned out a record number of novels in just a handful of years. But the drugs started him on a path of addiction and eventual paranoia, though they also may have expanded his conciousness and allowed him to explore new and innovative alternate realities.

Today he remains one of the most widely read science fiction writers of all time, his books still widely popular amongst a wide range of age groups. As mentioned, this is an unvarnished looked at the man and his devils, his periodic breakdowns and his serial marriages to younger, star-struck women. It covers a lot of ground that we'd never before known about the man behind these amazing novels and stories.

Laurent Queyssi is an extensively published science fiction author and comics writer in France. He is also an expert and oft-used lecturer on Philip K. Dick.

Besides a number of graphic novels out with various Italian publishers, Mauro Marchesi has also illustrated covers for children’s books from Mondadori and worked on the Italian edition of Marie-Claire.
