More "out of this world" yarns from the heroes (and heroines!) of the spaceways that appeared from Fiction House over a thirteen-year period ending in 1953. They're all here. Captain Nelson Cole of the Solar Force, Gale Allen of the Girl's Patrol, Fero Planet Detective, Auro Lord of Jupiter, The Red Comet, Space Admiral Curry in the Doomed Universe, Spurt Hammond, Buzz Crandall, and Flint Baker. And they are all in just the first 64-page issue! This was the first and the longest running science fiction comic until DC's Strange Adventures came along, ten years later.

All the monsters, babes, spaceships and sci-fi elements appeared in these seminal issues, behind cool covers by Will Eisner and Lou Fine. These ultra rare early issues (#6 is considered "scarce") each get better, as the artists are getting their footing and clearly enjoying themselves. The stories are just one step removed from the sci-fi pulps, which had themselves only been around since Hugo Gernsback kicked things off in the mid-1920s.

These are just good plain fun. This is the first time these have been collected complete and in full color. There's even a space superhero here, The Red Comet, and lovely Gale Allen of the Girl's Patrol, bringing equal opportunity to space. Considering all these issues are from those seminal days of 1940, the art here is surprisingly good. It's interesting to find Charles Quinlan's distinctive work here, since he would shortly go on to draw the notorious and highly collectible Catman and Kitten. And the Eisner covers, done just as he was drawing the first Spirit Sunday sections, are good fun, seeing him out of his usual "realistic" style, drawing space girls and bug-eyed monsters.
