Our Highest Recommendation. By Richard Cheek.

Published to accompany an exhibition at the Grolier Club, September 12-October 27, 2018. A massive and comprehensive survey of the books, printed ephemera, and toys relating to military life and wartime experience that were produced for children and teens during two consecutive but dramatically different periods: first, the era from the end of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871 until the outbreak of the Great War in 1914; and second, the 51 months of fighting that comprised "the war to end all wars."

Collector's Perspective and Introduction, followed by an extraordinary collection, literally several hundred items from the author's collection, from several to just one on a page. Conditon on these is amazing, and the variety and choice of material is really impressive. It's packed with wonderful graphics, primarily choice book bindings and magazine covers and to a lesser extent, games and toys.

Massive and brilliantly illustrated, Playing Soldier  demonstrates how these publications and products were used to persuade boys to admire and wish to become soldiers and sailors, and to accept war as a swift path to manhood requiring acts of exceptional bravery, selfless service, and patriotic devotion. Includes a list of illustration sources and an index.

This is truly impressive, if I haven't made that point already. I've never seen as nice a collection of imagery. Although most of it is from Britain and the U.S., there are superlative sections on French and German materials. The vast concentration is on printed works, much of it exceptionally fine condition copies of extraordinary trade bindings of boy's and young adult books, the kind I only rarely see at book shows. Trade bindings of this caliber have become highly collectible in recent years, so it's a treat to have this join the very limited number of books examining these efforts that will never be equalled again.

And at just $60, for this size volume, this is a truly exceptional value. I hope this stays in print long enough to satisfy everyone, these books have a way of selling out quickly and then they are too expensive to be reprinted. -Bud
