Availability: Coming Soon

$46.99
Collects Youthful's Beware #10-12 and Avon's Phantom Witch Doctor & Night of Mystery 1952-1953. Recommended. By Doug Wildey, Harry Harrison et al.

Youthful operated from 1949 to 1954 and only published about ten titles. Doug Wildey was the company's lead artist--he later went on to create the 1964 animated television series Jonny Quest. This is a totally different title than Beware from Trojan--also collected by PS. Here too are two scarce Avon one-shots: Phantom Witch Doctor, cover & 7 pages by Kinstler,  and Night of Mystery by Kinstler and A.C. Hollingsworth. This pulls out all the stops: we have Edgar Allan Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum by Wildey; an atom bomb and shrunken-head cover; an Ambrose Bierce adaptation; and a S.O.T.I. issue.

Material from Beware #12 is notoriously cited in Seduction of the Innocent by Wertham. Issues #10-12 are actually #1-3, due to a title change from Fantastic. With #13, it became Chilling Tales.

In Phantom Witch Doctor, 1952, the British East Africa commissioner, George Harcourt, murders M'Basi, a witch doctor and Naba, his daughter, to steal their ivory cache. Twenty-five years later, they return as phantoms to crush his son under tons of ivory. This has always been one of my favorite Avon titles--the cover by Kinstler is a gem.

Plus, Night of Mystery, 1953, offers us John Mason, who leaves behind a diary detailing how he tried to help his friend Bob Trant who was a roaming monster. But what ever happened to poor Mason, who is not be be found anywhere?

The short-lived publisher Youthful started Beware but only managed to put out three issues. Then Trojan stepped in, took over the material already done, and continued the title for another two years. Thus the same creators who began their work here, continue in Trojan's Beware, which has also been collected by PS under virtually the same name, even down to the "Chilling Tales" part. But we've tried to differentiate them by using that on this, since it's also "Volume 1" of Beware.
