Collected together for the very first time, this often unfairly forgotten 11-strong series boasts some of the most magnificent covers of any of the EC wannabes. Fiction House ALWAYS featured long-legged, lovely ladies on every cover and in nearly every story! One of these forgotten masters is Maurice Whitman, doing fabulous covers here. Monster is a delightful but short-lived Fiction House title, just two issues.
One of the interesting facts about these issues is that with Alex Toth so popular over at DC and Standard, FH had their own Toth-wannabes in the form of Bill Benulis alone and also with partner Abel, doing work very much in the dramatic Toth style. Here also is Johnny Bell, Bill Discount and it looks like Maurice Whitman even does some stories, or at least someone in his excellent, detailed style. Bell is an underrated artist--his "Ghost of the Gorgon" here is a masterpiece that reminds us of Howard Nostrand, over at Harvey. And it features a nude lady Gorgon! He has several more stories here, all above average.
In case you missed the Dr. Drew collection by Jerry Grandenetti and the Eisner Studio, in these issues Fiction House reprints three fine stories that are as good as any Eisner Spirit story. This stuff is wonderful! These first appeared in FH’s Rangers Comics.
These stories suggested unpleasantness rather than just stepping forward and pulling the old schlock-it-up lever. Heartily recommended for the more discerning horror comics reader. Digitally enhanced and faithfully reproduced.
