PRE-CODE CLASSICS SPOOK Volume 1

$44.99
Collects #22-26, 1953. Recommended. Art by L.B.Cole, Jay Disbrow, Rudy Palais et al. Star Comics was run by L.B. Cole, a man who put great faith in bright colors and striking cover designs. A typical Star issue would have--as all five of these issues do--an eye-opening surreal cover by Cole. Inside there's pre-code horror, in these issues by the unique and fun Jay Disbrow, along with Ken Battefield, George Peltz, Rudy Palais (whose work is a highlight of the Crime Does Not Pay run), Vernon Henkel, and Howard Larsen, whose work for Avon and Fox make him an over-the-top artist to remember. Wild stuff all around.

These Star issues are highly collectible today for their amazing L.B. Cole covers. But the Jay Disbrow work, even though it’s slightly clunky and odd, is also a high point for me. Disbrow was influenced by Wally Wood and perhaps by Basil Wolverton, as well as the jungle comics work of Matt Baker and Jack Kamen. His horror and science fiction is simply a kick, and Craig Yoe as part of his horror comics reprints devoted an entire book to him. Here he contributes several entertaining stories.
