Description

120 paintings and drawings by this award-winning illustrator and fine artist. Born in Vietnam and raised in the States, she is fascinated by creating traditional paintings in the realms of fantasy and surrealism. Tran illustrates for magazines, books, product packaging, advertising and mural art. Her clients include Smithsonian magazine, Tiger Beer, the World Wildlife Fund and Amazon, and she has been showcased in galleries across the world. “Ambedo is a collection of all of the sweat and tears I’ve shed in the past decade of my career.”

Beautiful girls and women predominate in her pictures, but that is only the beginning. Many are accompanied by animals and seem lost, searching for some mysterious place or etheral world. In “The Flooded Hour” series from 2016, Tran offers surreal scenes that evoke “nostalgia and melancholy. It’s my attempt to give form to obscure sorrows and how to cope with them.” What we SEE are giant-like women and creatures, at one with our own world in miniature before and below them. It’s very thought-provoking and beautifully rendered, from the detail and lighting, to the soft coloring.

“It’s a recording of my progression as an artist in terms of style, technique and personal narrative. I very much hope that you like the sweat and tears that are sprinkled onto each page.” –Tran Nguyen

“As artists, we do not (and should not) be rewarded for our technical skill alone. The tools we develop…are only the practical vocabulary to manifest our vision as creators. The work of Tran Nguyen is an evolving and living example of this idea. …Her images are poetic and visceral. They sing with an allusive narrative,,,woven tapestries of potent and increasingly beautiful and complex internal worlds. She is a rare vision and potent voice.” -Rebecca Lévéille

Includes “the Making of Into the Dead of Night,” a step-by-step walk through the creation of this masterful piece, drawn with pencil and then acrylics. With complete commentary by the artist.

Tran Nguyen is a fine artist and freelance illustrator currently based in Georgia.
