The history of the genre is traced, beginning with the debut of Dime Sport (later renamed Dime Sports), the first magazine from a major publisher to provide competition for Street & Smith’s long-established Sport Story Magazine. Complementing the text is a complete catalog of fiction from the six major publishers who competed with S&S.

Includes iconic covers by Norman Saunders, George Gross, and Earle Bergey. Also notes about noted sci-fi and mystery writers moonlighting, often with pseudonyms, in the sports pulps pages.

Michelle Nolan is a lifetime comics and pulp collector, and professional sports reporter and journalist. She wrote some of the earliest comic book indexes before the Overstreet Price Guide began including such information. She was a long-time contributor to Comic Book Marketplace. Her other ground-breaking books with McFarland include Love on the Racks: A History of American Romance Comics; Ball Tales: A Study of Baseball, Basketball and Football Fiction of the 1930s through the 1960s; and just recently published, Archie’s Rivals in Teen Comics, 1940s-1970s: An Illustrated History (2020).
