Description

A rich collection of well-known fairy tales, this magnificently illustrated hardcover will be a treasure in anyone’s library. Thirty stories recount the adventures of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Three Bears, The Ugly Duckling, Aladdin, Little Red Riding Hood, Rumpelstiltskin, The Frog Prince, and many other beloved characters. Golden Age master illustrator Charles Robinson provides nearly 200 illustrations: 34 full-page images — 12 in full color, 16 in black and red, and 6 in black and white — and scores of smaller line drawings on more than half the pages. Plus two-color endpapers and a stunning embossed, full gilt cover.

Storytellers include Aesop, Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson, and Robert Southey as well as anonymous sources.

Charles Robinson was among the top tier of book illustrators from the mid 1990’s all the way up until the 1930s. The best of his books, such as this one, sold right up there with the best of Rackham and Dulac’s similar gift editions. He did three “Big Books” in the same format, with a plethora of illustrations. Whether you are reading it yourself or reading to a youngster, you have wonderful drawings on more than half of the pages.

The paper stock is a nice gloss to capture the black & white as well as the two color illustrations. The blue cloth on the cover beautifully offsets the ornate gilt drawing, which is one of the high points of this series. It truly gives you the feeling of owning a handsome jeweled edition with all that gilt.

Like all Calla books, this is a facsimile edition designed to capture the format and look of the original edition from 1911. A look online shows copies of the original priced between $175 and $900, depending on condition. It’s one of the more desirable books from the Golden Age of Illustration, and a high point of Robinson’s career.
