Description

Second in a seven-volume library (Volume 1 quickly sold out but was just recently reprinted). Eleven complete stories by the master illustrator, Tales of North American folklore, from the Canadian Goldrush to the American West and the Deep South. A Visit with John Colter, The Will to Live, Naugatuck 1757, Little Big Horn, Blues, Katana. Stories of Native Americans, of black blues musicians and angry police, of trappers and explorers pushing the extremes of survival.

All were first published in Italy, between 1977 and 1990. What they have in common is Toppi’s interest in pursuing legends and history, as well as his amazing storytelling art that defies an easy definition. It’s fine art parading as comics.

David Mack on Toppi: “For every use of his elegant expressive ink lines, there is a wonderful contrast of negative space. There is a primal tension in this contrast, but also a zen-like balance…it reveals its hidden mysteries in layers. The work also reflects a depth and agility of the mind behind it.”

“His use of figure and line sings to you…There is a confidence and directness in his ability to transcend tradition and invent a new grammar, a new vocabulary of storytelling and chronological sequencing. The great masters are those creators who add new vocabulary to the medium in which they work.”

“You get the sense that Toppi challenged himself in every endeavor.”
