Description

Disney Masters presents acclaimed artists from around the world working in the grand Disney tradition. Vol 7: WDC&S serialized adventures from the mid-1950s: Mickey Mouse: The Pirates of Tabasco Bay, with travels and travails — from cowboy capers at “Yesterday Ranch” to the head-scratching mystery of “The Vanishing Railroad!” And Vol 8: Donald Duck: Duck Avenger Strikes Again: Donald is secretly that infamous super-anti-hero, Duck Avenger! Seven complete Mickey serials in all — each newly recolored in the warm tints of the original comic books.

Volume 7: In the title story, Mickey’s uncle wants to attract tourists back to his fading seaside resort — and Mickey and Goofy think populating the pier with fierce pirate “actors” is just the way to do it! But when Black Pete and his scurvy crew stage a real pirate raid, our intrepid heroes go from planning the boardwalk to walking the plank!

Paul Murry — one of the longest-serving Mickey Mouse artists — surprises, enchants, and delights with rollicking adventures told in a straightforward, no-holds-barred style. These are the stories many of the older baby boomers grew up reading in the back pages of Walt Disney’s Comics & Stories. While Barks was doing his one-off ten pages in the front of every issue, Murry was serializing these into long, satisfying adventures, with Mickey as brave and fearless hero, solver of every sort of problem and obstacle. It’s great work. A feature essay examines his work in Vol 7.

Volume 8: The Duck Avenger? But when Uncle Scrooge sends out a robot double of the Avenger, Donald’s secret is threatened! And will hyper-lucky Gladstone Gander make things even worse? (Oh, yes, you know he will!). In “Ellsworth’s Ornery Orphan,” Mickey Mouse tells the distant desert tale of his mynah bird pal, Ellsworth—and a showdown with dread pirate Mozambeak! And a money-scented perfume sends Brigitta MacBridge and Scrooge to the isle of Bananaland in “The Other Golden Helmet”—Romano Scarpa’s one-and-only collaboration with Duck artist supreme Carl Barks! For the first time in English!

Carl Barks (1901-2000) spent most of his life in Oregon. In 1987, he was one of the three inaugural inductees in the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame (along with Eisner and Jack Kirby). He’s also a Disney Legend.

Romano Scarpa (1927-2005) trained as a fine artist and an architect. He left his own animation studio in 1953 to draw original comics stories for Walt Disney’s Italian publisher. He is most famous for his stories starring Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Snow White.

The Italian comics artist Giovan Battista Carpi (1927-1999) is best known for writing and drawing Disney Duck comic book stories.
