Deluxe Leatherbound Edition. Our Highest Recommendation. Four volumes present an illustrative history of all Burroughs’ publications in the United States (and some from the U.K.). Written and compiled by Michael Tierney, the narrative gives the history of Burroughs’ work and the often legendary artists who visualized it, featuring untold stories, art that hasn’t been seen since its release, and pieces that were buried in the vaults from the beginning of his publishing history to the present day. Pulps, books, paintings, prints, comics…it’s all here. Chenault & Gray, 2017. Out of Print. Condition: Slipcase has a small bump to the back, and two 3 inch creases on one side. Volume 2 is graded very good. It has many small scuffs on the back and two large scuffs that have left an indentation. The rest of the books are graded Very Fine.

Description

Four volumes present an illustrative history of all Burroughs’ publications in the United States (and some from the U.K.). Pulps, books, paintings, prints, comics…it’s all here.

Officially licensed and sanctioned by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., this nearly 1,200 page examination of the vast publishing illustrative history of Edgar Rice Burroughs is divided into four parts. 140,000 words and 5000 images.

This might be best compared to the long out of print Russ Cochran’s ERB Library of Illustration, but runs up to the present, and covers more ground. Russ’ set was more about the art and presenting it well; this has far more images and more text, offering a complete look at ERB in art from the very beginning. What an ambitious project, and they have pulled it off admirably.

From Frazetta paintings to Neal Adams Tarzan paperback covers, from obscure pulp covers to sexy Dejah Thoris comics, from rare U.K. paperbacks with great new artwork, to Reed Crandall, Roy Krenkel, ERB-dom, Jeffrey Jones, Michael Kaluta, Joe Jusko…they are all here.

Four large-size volumes, each in dust jacket with a matching full color illustration on the hardcover boards beneath. All in a large, striking black slipcase with white spine lettering.

The publisher may be sold out on this, we are awaiting final word. We got enough extra copies in, above our advance orders.

Note: Slipcase has a small bump to the back, and two 3 inch creases on one side. Volume 2 is graded very good. It has many small scuffs on the back and two large scuffs that have left an indentation. The rest of the books are graded Very Fine.
