Replica of a rare 1959 horror magazine with GREAT artwork. Highly Recommended. Art by Al Williamson, Angelo Torres, Gray Morrow, Bob Powell, Joe Orlando, George Tuska & Paul Reinman. The contents of this were most likely for a never released, second issue of Weird Mysteries, since they have a horror host in common AND EC writer Carl Wessler again writes all the stories. And check out the ex-EC artists, as well as two stunningly great stories by a young Gray Morrow! This has the original black and white interior pages, including all ads but a full color cover–two in fact, one with PS’s promotion, and a 2nd reproducing EXACTLY the original painted cover by George Tuska. PS Artbooks, 2020.

Interestingly enough, according to the Grand Comics Database, just two of these stories have ever been reprinted. One by Torres appeared in an issue of The Rocket’s Blast in 1974, the other in a Dark Horse collection of Al Williamson work done in 2004.  The companion magazine that PS has also just done is Weird Mysteries, also a one-shot from 1959 which preceded this by about eight months.

This is FIVE YEARS before Creepy #1 came out from Warren; Warren’s own Eerie, sans the Tales, came out a year later, in 1966.

This is a rare one and it’s such a treat to see these EC artists all working in the same magazine. Gray Morrow is certainly a welcome addition, his work is every bit as good here as Al Williamson’s. I’ve personally had a copy of Eerie Tales for many years but it’s a scarce little puppy.

Although Carl Wessler is not as well known as Gaines and Feldstein for his EC work, he wrote dozens of stories for EC. So it’s very interesting to see him pop up here, four years after his last EC horror story appeared, and here writing every story in this issue.

The host of this mag in none other than a character named “Morgue’n”, who also appeared in Weird Mysteries, as Morgue’n. Here he calls himself “your Morgue Keeper.” But strangely enough, these two were published by two completely different publishers, in different parts of the U.S. But one is cover dated March of 1959, and Eerie Tales is dated November, so they certainly are tied together.

We’re pleased to see them back in print, and hope this is just the beginning of some interesting new replica editions from PS Artbooks.
