Three successful illustrators, two new to us but no less interesting, and Robert O. Reid, Colliers artist extraordinaire, and master of “cartoon realism.” J.F. We’ve seen and enjoyed Reid’s fine work, but knew little about him until now. In a style not too unlike John Held, Jr., Reid also channeled the humor and pretty girl technique of George Petty to create likable, pert girls and Dagwood-style men on the covers and interior artwork for dozens of the top magazine titles in the 1920s through the 1940s. By the 1940s he was doing big-time editorial artwork for clients like General Tire, Old Gold Cigarettes, Topps Gum and Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer.

Neysa McMein was highly successful, drawing beautiful portraits of women for The Saturday Evening Post, McClures but especially for McCalls, commanding the incredible rate of $1000 per cover in the 1920s annd 1930s. Her life is as interesting as her work, hanging out with famous artists and others, and editor Dan Zimmer has long wanted to do a feature on her work.

Little is known about the Canadian illustrator J.F. Kernan, so we have just a one-page biography but lots of major cover art by him; he was as prolific as better known artists like Parrish and Norman Rockwell, doing not only magazines but calendars and editorial ads for major names like International Harvester and Fisk Tires.
