A highlight of the time-honored gathering of children’s publishers in Bologna, Italy, the Illustrators Annual is juried every year from the finest art at the show. Sure to provoke envy of the fair’s attendees, this special volume inspires readers to marvel at the brilliance of the gifts shared by those whose work is featured in these pages.

Includes special questions section with designer Seymour Chwast. Also a jury report, with photos of the competition event; an interview with cover artist Igor Oleyni, with six pages of his outstanding art. He’s one of our favorites here.

Illustrators that we particularly like include Lee Yun-Chuan (Taiwan), Santiago Wardak (Italy), Holman Wang (3D modeling, Canada), Narisa Togo (Japan), Anna Desnitskaya (Russia), Sandro Bassi (Venezuela), and Jan Bajtlik (Poland). We’ve included several illustrations by these folks here in our extra scans.

Bud here: I am more of a traditionalist in my enjoyment of artwork, so sometimes modern styles and abstract, suggestive art doesn’t appeal to me. That’s an issue I have with this annual; going through it, I do find some artwork that I enjoy. But I find a lot of material I am not into, so I have a hard time giving this my personal recommendation. That said, if you have more liberal art appreciation than I do, and if you like the WIDE variety of modern children’s book art, then forget my opinion and check this out!
