Explore the amazing visual history of Marvel Comics variant covers in this first-ever collection. Comprising some of the most sought-after and valuable comics, variant covers have become a tradition in comics publishing. For Marvel, the turning point may have been in 1991, when X-Men #1 set the world record for the best-selling comic of all time, which is attributed to the astonishing five variant covers released for the issue. The notion of variant covers caught on and has now become a regular part of Marvel Comics’ diverse output, not to mention for many other publishers, with a spectacularly creative set of alternate covers being created for many key issues.

Like ’em or hate ’em, you have to admit that many of our finest comic artists have been turned loose to do their very own takes on both milestone and minor issues. It’s always fascinating to see what one artist will choose to illustrate versus another. And since many artists are devoted to covers more than inside art, this is often the only way to see work of some fan favorite artists.

Some publishers, such as Dynamic, make a habit of including most variants in their trade paperback collections. Marvel, however, has not always done this — so many covers here are being collected for the first time.

Among the many contributors are Michael Allred, J. Scott Campbell, Michael Cho, Alex Ross, John Tyler Christopher, Adi Granov, Stephanie Hans and many, many others.
