Description

The debut of the one and only Dazzler! Equal parts pop star and super hero, Dazzler broke new ground and faced some of the Marvel Universe’s greatest powers, from the Hulk to Doctor Doom and Galactus — all while fighting against a wave of anti-mutant hysteria! And as if that’s not enough, Dazzler also pits her sound-based powers against Klaw, finds herself fighting for her life in prison and contends with every creep in the record business. Beginning in X-Men and Amazing Spider-Man, Alison Blaire, A.K.A. Dazzler, eventually debuted in her own series — one of the comic book direct market’s very first exclusive offerings.

Dazzler #1 sold over 400,000 copies — not a single copy on the newsstand, all directed into comic shops. It was a first-ever attempt at this, and was, let us say, hugely successful. At the time, top selling comics were lucky to do 250,000 copies. And the title lasted for 40 issues, eventually selling even better on traditional newstands than in the Direct Market where it began.

Danny Fingeroth reveals these facts and more in a nicely detailed introduction. He even looks in detail at the first 13 issues. But her beginnings were chronicled by the legendary X-Men team of Chris Clarmont, John Byrne and Terry Austin, in the aforementioned #130-131. A mutant? You bet she was!

Other contributors: Marv Wolfman, Keith Pollard and Alan Kupperberg. And inkers Mike Esposito, Alfredo Alcala, Danny Bulanadi, Armando Gil, and Vince Colletta.

Bonus material includes the original art for the splash page of Dazzler #1, and the first house ads from May 1981 Marvel titles.

Collects X-Men #130-131; Amazing Spider-Man #203; Dazzler #1-13, 1980-81.
