Description

A beautifully painted, ethereal story with a head-spinning twist. Samuel Beauclair’s life has hit the skids. He’s got writer’s block with his second novel, he’s going through a rough patch with his pregnant wife, and his apartment is in foreclosure. Sam takes his wife and flees to Melvile, an idyllic small town in the middle of nowhere where he once spent family vacations. Drinking, smoking, and staring at a blank page, Sam finally takes a job as a handyman for a man and his young sister. Can this normalcy help him recover? Minor nudity.

Sam works hard painting their house and, slowly, the trio become friends. But the girl is attracted to Sam, and Sam hasn’t been straight with her. But there is also a parallel story about his strange relationship with his famous novelist father, who died when Sam was very young. And another important thread, a complex coming-of-age story that his father once told him, that has haunted Sam ever since he heard it, at much too young an age to understand its real meaning.

Will Sam’s past mistakes finally catch up with him? How long can he outrun his troubled past, even in the surreal, detached lifestyle in this tiny town and these friends who take Sam at face value?

Melvile, winner of the Belgian Prix Diagonale for best graphic novel of the year and the Prix Espoir for best story at the Versailles Festival and at the International Comic Festival in Algeria, is a dramatic and gorgeously illustrated look at the life and times of a lost man struggling to find his way back.

“This complicated story explores its characters in depth, allowing Samuel to be full of shades of gray rather than black and white morality. A mature, intelligent rumination on the stuggles of living up to the past and processing grief.” -Geekdad

“Everything about this is a perfect marriage of word and image to move the story along, capturing the weight of life, the weight of expectation, the burden of the past, and sometiems there is a need to burn it all and start again, inspiring in a way that makes this ideal for graphic novel treatment.” – The Digital Fix
