Description

The stories that built the Marvel Universe, the origin and earliest adventures from The Hulk’s short-lived six-issue series that paralleled the earliest issues of Fantastic Four. Caught in the heart of a nuclear explosion, victim of gamma radiation gone wild, Dr. Robert Bruce Banner now finds himself transformed during times of stress into the dark personification of his repressed rage and fury! Is the brutish Hulk man or monster…or is he both?!

Find out along with his only friend, Rick Jones, and some of his earliest, unfortunate enemies —  including the terrible Toad Men, the ancient Tyrannus, the Ringmaster and his Circus of Crime, and perhaps worst of all, General “Thunderbolt” Ross…father of Betty Ross, the woman that Bruce Banner loves!

The first two issues feature five-part, full-length stories. #3 features 3 stories and the first appearance of the Ring Master, and his origin retold. #4 and 5 each feature two stories. #6, drawn entirely by Steve Ditko, is a full-length story.

This is early Marvel at its most primeval, trying its best to combine monster and super-hero into a successful title. While the FF, X-Men and Spidey all did great from the start, The Hulk struggled and the title was cancelled after six issues. Meanwhile, The Hulk began as a grey monster but quickly changed to his iconic green color. Only his friend Rick Bryant stood by him as the army wanted desperately to end his existence. Great work!!!
