Description

I.W. Publishing became notorious for publishing unauthorized reprints of other company’s comics, often with new covers. And from the Golden Age to pre-code, with NO comics code approval! Issues #9-12 are an eccentric mix of weird and strange tales from Jay Disbrow, George H. Appel, Ross Andru, Ben Brown, Bernard Baily and Carl Burgos. Plus, the bonus issue Avon’s Strange Worlds featuring out of this world spine-tingling science fiction fare from the likes of Mike Esposito, Everett Raymond Kinstler, Syd Shores and Gene Fawcette.

Incredibly, I.W., also known as Super Comics, produced 118 separate titles, no mean achievement, which is where we start with Strange Mysteries.

Note: Caveat Emptor! If you are a hardcore collector of the PS Artbooks series, understand that this is a reprint of reprints. So you may be getting stories you’ve already collected in their original incarnations from publishers like Avon, and various Iger shop titles. If you want to check out where these came from, go on Grand Comics Database and look up each of the issues #9-12, and it will give you the original sources of all these stories.

For example, Strange Mysteries #9 consists of two stories from Spook #28, 1954; “Red Rocket” from Captain Flight #11, 1947, and an 11-page story from Rulah #21, 1948! GCD says it’s “Matt Baker?” but I would say it’s an Iger Shop work, with a partial splash page by none other than Jay Disbrow!

All that said, I (Bud) actually find these strange I.W. reprints very interesting and have been putting together a complete collection of them. Apparently they were sold on newsstands in some places, but also in less traditional stores, thus the lack of the code approval. The quality of reproduction is just as good as from the originals, since these were done using original printing plates that I.W./Super bought or came across from a printer that had done all these comics back in the day. They are very odd and fascinating. Each issue nearly always had a completely new cover, in this case most are by Ross Andru and Mike Esposito,
