Description

Jack Kirby’s comic strip masterpiece is presented in an archival version featuring the complete dailies. Veteran scripters Dick and Dave Wood provided these late-1950s space/action adventure stories starring Sky Masters and his gang of intrepid followers, which closely resemble Kirby’s work on Challengers of the Unknown (which was being published at the same time). Kirby’s artwork is stunningly embellished by Wallace Wood and later by Marvel inker extraordinaire Dick Ayers.

Sky Masters was created at the beginning of the space race, when who would get into space and to the moon first was a national obsession. The strip takes place in the not-too distant future where the United States sends men into space but hasn’t ventured much further yet. The series is clearly anchored in the late 1950s/early 1960s so it serves as a highly stylized period piece that still holds up very nicely.

And the art…oh, boy, it doesn’t get much better than Kirby pencils and Wally Wood inks. The little work these guys did together is all delicious, and like the Challengers of the Unknown by the same team, this is their best work. Kirby took a partial sabbatical from his comic book work to devote himself to this fine strip.

And much of the Wood here looks like his finest work at EC, with high detail, crisp inking. Here are his trademark beautiful women — with a Kirby touch — highly detailed technology, and that Wood magic that harks back to Weird Science and Weird Fantasy masterpieces!

Eleven full adventures! Plus a fine illustrated introduction by publisher Daniel Herman, who maps out how this came to be and what else Kirby was working on around this time…just before he came back to work at Marvel and created the Stan and Jack universe. Nicely illustrated with original artwork and rare comic book covers.

Some of the Sky Masters have been collected before, but the material used in this archival edition ranges from original art, to press proofs, to tear sheets, and boasts the best reproduction of the strip ever.
