To force more comparisons if you are not familiar with Colleen’s work, think of the fine fantasy artist Alicia Austin, early in her career. And think of J.H. Williams III and his work on Promethea (which won his 13 nominations and two Eisner Awards) and more recently, Sandman: Overture for the innovative page design and elaborate storytelling.

Colleen acknowledges her use of Harry Clarke’s work to inspire this dark but beautiful story. You can see it in elements on nearly every page. Elaborately embroidered gloves and dresses, strange mutant characters, melting candles, stained glass windows, ornate forests and villages. And the characters themselves, the Queen and Princess are so very beautiful in the best Art Nouveau style.

From the Hugo, Bram Stoker, Locus, World Fantasy, Nebula award-winning, and New York Times bestselling writer Neil Gaiman (American Gods) comes this graphic novel adaptation by Colleen Doran, who has her own long list of nominations and awards, including Eisners, Harveys and a Hugo.
