Description

Alex Schomburg produced the most dazzling array of high quality comic book covers in the Golden Age of American comics (1933-1955). This book collects, for the first time, a host of tantalizing Schomburg treasures in one volume. Super-heroes, jungle girls, robots, wild animals, and space travelers abound in these romantic and nostalgic pop art icons of the bygone WWII era.

Schomberg has won every major award for both science fiction and comic book art. Thrilling, Wonder, Captain America, Marvel Mystery, Sub-Mariner, Human Torch, America’s Best, Exciting, Startling, USA, Daring Mystery…these are but a few of the dazzling titles for which he created amazing cover art. He was Timely’s (Marvel’s) definitive World War II cover artist. And then in the late 1940s, he shifted to adorable pin-up-quality jungle girls and sci-fi covers, often using the name “Xela” in a trademark airbrush style that made him one of the most collectible artists of the Golden Age.

He took that same airbrush style and brought it to books and magazines all through the 1950s.

Patriotic superheroes, as well as jungle girls, robots, wild animals, and space travelers are loving rendered in this collection of his best comic book covers, from the most iconic to the rarest and most unusual.
