An all-new series from the creator of Bone. At the dawn of humanity, during a prolonged period of hardship and drought, three lost children meet a mysterious traveler named Tuki. Together, their dangerous journey leads them far north through the territory of a rival species who kill strangers without hesitation.
Called the Habiline, these warriors hunt and kill anyone found using fire. Tuki’s reputation precedes them and soon they find themselves at the center of unwanted attention not only from Habiline warriors, but of gods and giants!
“[TUKI] succeeds in transporting the reader to another time, and Smith’s passion for this period in Earth’s history comes through on every page.” -Oliver Sava, Onion/AV Club
“There’s always a sense of mystery about Jeff Smith’s comics, as if there is a great unknown hiding far back in each panel, too far to be seen by the reader.” -Leroy Douresseaux, I Reads You
A note on Paleoanthropology from Jeff Smith:
Evolution, unlike the neat bumper sticker that shows a single line of primates slowly standing upright, is in reality much messier and more scattershot. Isolated groups evolved separately over hundreds of thousands or even millions of years. Two million years ago, many different kinds of humans were all roaming upright on two legs across east Africa.
You will meet some of them in this story. Australopithecus, the species that the famous Lucy was from, part hominid, half human from the waist down. The Habiline people, still shaggy, but with a bigger brain who developed the stone hand axe, a precision tool. And more.
During this amazing epoch, the world was devastated by climate events that threatened to wipe out the struggling humans. Drought caused changes in the landscapes and massive migrations bringing the humans into conflict with each other. Then came the greatest upheaval yet – a new human, tall and strong, with the biggest brain of all, enters the scene bearing a power never before seen…the ability to control fire.
Here begin the terrors, Here begin the marvels.
