A brand-new anthology featuring comics and prose stories by cartoonists and professionals about the world of comic book conventions. Featuring stories that are funny, sad, sweet, embarrassing, and heartfelt; of a geek culture life that shapes us, encourages us, and exhausts us every summer. Featuring work by Brian Michael Bendis (The Man of Steel), Jim Zub (Wayward), Kieron Gillen (The Wicked and the Divine), Sina Grace (Iceman), and many more, including yours truly, Bud Plant. I was invited to contribute a story, “The California Boys,” based around my Summer, 1970 trip east to Oklahoma Multicon and on to my first New York Comic Art Convention.

Dark Horse editor Diana Schutz writes "Only Lonely Madmen;" Amy Chu and Louis Chin write about "Falling in Love;" Andy Kuhn does a story called "Con Sketch;" Trina Robbins and three others write about San Diego Comic-Con 1977; Hope Nicholson and friends write ”Bedfellows,” Tim Seeley and Chris Chuckry write "Secret Origin." More than half the book is made up of full color, short comic book stories; the balance is, like my piece, entirely text.

Here is a little more about my piece: We'd driven to Houston the year before, in 1969, for my first out-of-state show. This time we were doing two shows back to back, and driving to the east coast for the first of many trips to that mecca of comics and professionals, New York City (San Diego Comic-Con was still a tiny, regional start-up in 1970.

It’s all about being an avid comic collector. It was on this trip I first met Frazetta, Jeff Jones, Berni Wrightson, Barry Windsor-Smith and Michael Kaluta, Roy Krenkel and Gray Morrow. And this was the start of being a regular show dealer. Just after I got home, I took the fanzines and underground comics that I had been selling at both shows, and began advertising them in fanzines and adzines, such as the early Comics Buyer's Guide. And I began producing flyers, then catalogs. That is the beginning of this business which is still running right here, almost 50 years later.
