- Full Description
An unprecendented, profusely illustrated compendium celebrating over 100 writers and artists behind our rich legacy of fantasy, horror, and science fiction in comic books, literature, and cinema. 75 contributors give us major, original essays--contributors as distinguished as their subjects! For example, Bill Stout writes about L. Frank Baum; Will Murray on John W. Campbell; Jim Vadeboncoeur, Jr. on Frank Frazetta; Harlan Ellison on Frank Herbert; David Gerrold on Robert Heinlein; Roy Thomas on Robert E. Howard; etc.
Here's some more names, all covered in this volume (along with the ones above): Darrell Schweitzer on Arthur C. Clarke; Dick Lupoff on Edgar Rice Burroughs; noted ERB and Frazetta expert Robert Barrett on Dell Comics cover painter Moe Gollub.
Plus essays on Robert Crumb, Jack Davis, Gustave Dore, Lord Dunsany, Basil Gogos, H. Rider Haggard, Graham Ingles, Ray Bradbury, Zdenek Burian et al.
Pete Von Sholly has put this all together, and he has illustrated every entry with an appropriate painting of each creator surrounded by their creations. I wish this was not so expensive, but it was published in England and probably in a relatively small edition, by PS Artbooks, who we know as the compiler of all the Pre-Code comics archives.
He's done a fantastic job here. Here's his own description:
"The "Fictioneers Project" which has culminated in these two wonderful books has a long history but mainly I just wanted to celebrate a special group of men and women who made indelible marks on our collective and individual consciousness and whose works stand as milestones in the history of fiction in culture. It couldn't be just my personal lesser known favorites, if it was going to be a history so there were obligatory entries like Walt Disney, Steven Spielberg, Ursula LeGuin, Rod Serling, Gene Roddenberry and so on." - Pete Von Sholly, who also provides a Preface here.
Pete is a friend of ours, so we asked him if he'd put together a bookplate for us. Less than an hour later, he'd genned up an idea and one will be included with each volume.
