Paul Pope (Battling Boy, Batman: Year 100) provides stunning full color plates for short stories and novellas by Algernon Blackwood, one of the original masters of horror and weird fiction. Blackwood's work predicts and predates the work of H.P. Lovecraft, who called The Willows "the greatest horror tale ever written in the English language." Pope brings five Blackwood stories to unsettling visual life, tackling the challenge of how to illustrate an author who had his gaze firmly fixed on the inexpressible, unknowable and uncanny.
Wrap around cover in full color with no text. Illustrated endpapers. Three-page introduction by Campbell. Eight double-page plates plus single page plates, all in color, as well as titles and vignettes in two and three color. Calling this lavishly illustrated would be an understatement.
This edition is accompanied by an introduction by the great horror novelist Ramsey Campbell, and the artwork is colored by Omar Abdullah.
Here are several takeaways from Paul Pope's three-page "An Artist's Note:"
"The Willows is a remarkable piece of pastoral supernatural fiction. There is almost nothing like it in print, and it is a great honor to be invited to illustrated Algernon Blackwood's phantasmagoric visions. We carefully selected an array of his strange stories for modern readers who may be discovering his writings for the first time. I would rate him next to Jack London and Leo Tolstoy in terms of his depictions of a living, vital natural world. "
"Blackwood posited the idea of the existence of a race of beings who once ruled our known universe, only to be banished by a higher entity for tampering with powers beyond our understanding. These Outer Beings are forever trying to break through the barrier that keeps them at bay...in The Willows we sense a personified malevolence that bleeds through the mundane..."
"[Blackwood] is a formidable writer who belongs in the classic pulp pantheon of Robert E. Howard and H.P. Lovecraft and the very best masters of the genre."
This is a companion to, and matches in size and format, two more books in the Beehive Books Illuminated Editions series: The Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde, lavishly illustrated by Yuko Shimizu and designed by Maëlle Doliveux, and The Island of Doctor Moreau, illustrated by Bill Sienkiewicz. Each one features fine press printing quality, deluxe bindings, and unique, die-cut slipcases with extra artwork debossed into the cover. All enclosed in a extra-illustrated cardboard box.
