Our Highest Recommendation. By Reed Crandall. Reed Crandall was one of the greatest comic artists of the Golden Age and early Silver Age. His work graced the covers and pages of National Comics (drawing the iconic Uncle Sam), as well as Blackhawk, Doll Man and many others. Legendary for his remarkable talents as a draftsman, he was the quintessential "Artist's Artist." And then he joined EC! This focuses on Crandall's remarkable EC Comics stories, including many that are outright classics. Huge size, as the art was done old style, twice up.

Includes stories in all genres: a rare science fiction tale from Shock Suspense, horror classics like "Dog Food," "Carrion Death," "The Firebug." "Hong Kon" is an unusual story from Extra, a severely under-rated title. "Burial at Sea" is from Crypt. "Battle" is a classic Roman Legion story from Two-Fisted #19. There's also "Mother's Day," "Together They Lie," "This'll Kill You," "Swamped," and the classic pirate story "Blackbeard" from Piracy #3 and a second pirate story, "Partners," from Piracy #7. And much more, of course.

It may be no secret that I've been a huge fan of Crandall's artwork since the mid-sixties, when I started collecting all of his work in the Quality Group comics, in EC, in Stan Lee's Atlas horror and sci-fi comics, in fanzines like ERB-dom, in special projects like new editions of the Edgar Rice Burroughs books from Canaveral Press, even in something as minor as Treasure Chest Comics, where he drew "This Godless Communism," today highly collectible, too!

And for the Warren magazines, he re-created the fine work he'd done for EC with entirely new stories, as one of the stand-out artists amongst many stand-out artists who did those hallowed early issues. He even worked with Wally Wood and friends to create the early THUNDER Agents issues. And his work never suffered for lack of attention, it was outstanding from the early Golden Age to the last fan pieces. He and Lou Fine were the artists other artists wanted to emulate during the Golden Age, for their fine line work and detail, for their curvaceous women and dynamic, sleek heroes.

Here is the first-ever chance, other than in the anthology EC Art collections, of seeing his original art up close and personal. Here are 22 complete stories, from titles like Crime Suspense, Extra, Haunt of Fear, Piracy, Shock Suspense, Tales from the Crypt, Two Fisted Talesand Vault of Horror. Plus two wonderful em>Piracy covers--one of which I owned for 20 years or so. There is nothing like seeing his skilled brush work in high focus, a total departure from the smaller, full color comics which often hid all the detail.

And like all the award-winning Artist's Editions, this book was scanned entirely from the original art--if you are a fan of Crandall's work, there IS NO better way to view it!
