"The most delightful books, in which fun and beauty walk hand in hand."--The Junior Bookshelf. Brooke was a wildly popular illustrator in his day, with books featuring his name as the biggest selling feature (Leslie Brooke's Book of...). Here he tackles many of the most classic fairy tales, offering both color plates and handsome black & white drawing for each.

It's fun to see how these were first imagined, long before Disney and animators modernized the stories. And Brooke's delicate coloring and fanciful imagination are perfectly suited here. A book to read to your kids or grandkids, or one to enjoy yourself for its delightful period illustrations. Brooke began his career in 1891, succeeding Walter Crane as the illustrator of the popular Mrs. Molesworth's books. His reputation was made when he received high acclaim for Andrew Lang's bestselling Nursery Rhymes.

He followed up this success with this these two books, at the same time creating the character "Johnny Crow." His work was consistently detailed and humorous, and the expressive nature of his characters showed an understanding of both human nature and the animal world.

Another fine Calla facsimile edition from the originals from 1905 and 1910. Includes a delightful full color wrap-around jacket, illustrated endpapers, a full cloth extra-illustrated binding, and 188 illustrations!
